ISSUE AFFECTING THE EMPLOYER SUPPORT PAYMENT SCHEME
Defence is aware of an issue affecting the payment of some approved Employer Support Payment Scheme applications. Defence is working to fix this technical issue as a matter of urgency to ensure the processing of all approved payments are made as soon as possible. This issue is not effecting the submission of ESPS applications, which can still be made via the ESPS Online Claim System as normal.

Introduction

The Prince of Wales Award (POWA) scheme seeks to reward reservists and their civilian employers for their dedication and commitment to ADF service. It provides an opportunity for reservists to undertake a training or development activity that is related to and directly benefits their civilian occupation or profession.

Defence collects the personal information requested on this form for the purpose of conducting the Prince of Wales Award scheme. The information provided will be used to assess the reservist’s suitability to receive an award. The information requested is provided voluntarily and is not required by or under a ny Australian law.

Once received your complaint will be forwarded to the appropriate area within Defence for action.

Important information

All applications are subject to Defence Reserve Service (Protection) Act 2001 checks prior to progressing to the selection board.

All applicants will be subjected to a “Fit and Proper Person’s” check for the last 5 years of Service. This will be undertaken by Directorate of ADF Career Management Support | Military Personnel Branch prior to the Selection Board Meeting.

This form and additional attachments will be reviewed and assessed against other nominees, by a selection board of senior, executive and independent members. When submitting your application you should present a proposal that will highlight the potential benefits of undertaking a development activity to your civilian employment, your civilian employer and to Defence.

The proposal must also be developed in conjunction with, and receive the endorsement of your civilian employer.

Please provide a brief summary of your activity (200 words or less). This is just a brief description only, your FULL proposal is to be attached below.

Please note: The POWA Board sits each October with outcomes provided in November, please consider the dates of your proposal when putting your application forward.

Each applicant’s supporting proposal must be completed in a narrative form in plain English, and be no more than three pages in length. There is no specific format required however, applicants should ensure their application is clear and concise and the applications should be of high quality.

The POWA application and supporting proposal must include:

  • An overview of the applicant’s civilian employment or, if self-employed, involvement in a professional organisation or trade association.
  • A statement of the function and role of the employer, professional organisation or trade association.
  • A detailed description and strong justification of the proposed development activity, including: the nature of the activity; expected outcomes and deliverables, and detailed examples of how the proposed activity will be of benefit to both the individual and the employer.
  • A program or schedule; resource requirements; in conjunction with a detailed supporting justification.
  • A detailed breakdown of activity costings; it is recommended to detail any travel with a supporting itinerary, to ensure a clear use of expenditure and plans to best utilise the funds.
  • Any other information deemed pertinent to the application.
